Differently Abled Persons support

Welcome to Mount Kenya university, home to UNAI SDG Hub 10 on Reduced Inequalities. Here at the University we have staff and students who are differently abled (PWD). The University strives to provide the best studying atmosphere for all. MKU has implemented the following measures to support PWD students:

1. Disability Support Office: Mount Kenya University has a dedicated office mandated to attend to needs of students with disability. through this office the students receive mental health support and organize events such as disability awareness day.
2. Accessibility: the University has equipped lecture halls with lifts to help students move to their lecture halls, other buildings which has fewer floors are well equipped with wheelchair ramps. The university has also build washrooms for use by persons with disability. The University library has set aside as section for use by students with disability where they access personality services such as book search and retrieval.
3. Hostels: ground floor hostels are reserved for students with mobility disability and their friends who offer them support.
4. Inclusion : The PWD students are included in most of the University co-curricular activities such as clubs, talent shows, games such as chess and elections
5. Disability Resources: The University purchased Orbit readers, screen reading software (non-visual desktop access) and braille machines for use by the students in learning and examination . Working in collaboration with partners for care, the University has been able to donated wheelchairs to students in need.
6. Class Timetable Schedule: The University timetable considers PWD students by allocating them easily accessible classes and examination rooms mostly on the ground floor.
7. Human Resource: The University has a braille transcriber expert who translate course content and exam for the students and sign language interpreters who attend regular classes with students requiring their services.
8. Special Needs Resource: The University has a dedicated special needs laboratory used to train teachers on different equipment that support special need students.
9. Scholarships: Mount Kenya University Foundation considers PWD when allocation scholarships.
10. Partnership : The University has entered into MoUs with partners who support PWD students such as Mind and Beyond that offers mental health counselling services, Kilimanjaro Blind trust Africa that donates orbit readers and support their maintenances and National Council for Persons with Disability which is the overall body that deals with registration and certification of PWD.
11. E-Learning: To support students who wish to study away from the campus Mount Kenya University offers online courses. students can study online, undertake their continuous assessment tests and final exams through MKU e-Learning system. Here are courses that you can study online.
