MKU Foundation and Chancellor’s Scholarships 2020
Mount Kenya University Foundation Scholarship – Phase 2
MKU Foundation Ksh. 5,000,000 scholarship amount has awarded Ksh. 3,398,800 to 83 students in Phase 1 to cater for their respective September –December 2019 semester tuition fee.
- Ksh. 1,601,200 was to be awarded in Phase 2, to cater for January – April 2020 semester tuition fee
- Shortlisting of applicants for phase 2 award was done on 21st November 2019 drawing the names from a list of 81 applicants.
- Out of the 81 applicants on the waiting list, thirty-five (35) were awarded the scholarship amounting to Ksh. 1,601,050.
- Beneficiaries were awarded the scholarships in June, 2020.
Chancellor’s Scholarship Call 1
Chancellor’s scholarship is as a result of the generous contribution of Mount Kenya University Chancellor, Prof. John Struthers. Chancellor pledged to donate ten thousand pounds (£10,000) to the Foundation’s Ubuntu Fund, to be paid in four disbursements of £2,500.
Mount Kenya University through Mount Kenya University Foundation released the first call for the Chancellor’s scholarship worth Ksh. 600,000 (first tranche). The call was made to all regular students studying at Mount Kenya University and its campuses in Kenya.
The scholarship which was to cover partial tuition fees for one semester (May – August 2020), was released on 16th December 2019 and closed on 28th February 2020 at 1700hrs. Two hundred and seventy eight (278) applications were received, of which two hundred and five (205) were for General Category (Certificate, Diploma and Degree), two (2) for Persons with Disability, fifty five (55) for Special Talents and sixteen (16) for Orphans. All the applications were scored using a scoring rubric that put into consideration applicant’s personal details, talents and abilities, applicant’s family background, evidence of need and academic performance. The vetting and shortlisting of scholarship applicants took place on 6th April, 2020, 20th and 24th July 2020. This process resulted in shortlisting of thirty one (31) applicants for award of the Chancellor’s Scholarship amounting to Ksh. 588 666.72.
