MKU Tigers rugby team receives sport kits donation from NMG
Mount Kenya University Nairobi Campus rugby team MKU Tigers has received sports kits and equipment from Nation Media Group, a move expected to help the club improve on its performance. The MKU Tigers is among the best in the region and participates in many tournaments.
MKU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Deogratius JAGANYI, who received the kits together with the rugby team, said the university is committed to promote sports among students at all levels. “The University aims at helping to create a society whose originality encompasses the values of sport not only as a recreational activity but also as a source of livelihood,” he said.
While presenting the sports kit, Mr. James Sogoti, the Nation Media Group General Manager -Commercial Business, lauded the long standing cooperation between the two organizations and committed to partner with the University in other areas of mutual interest.
Rugby is a popular game at MKU, it attracts seasoned players such as Martin Owila who plays for KCB and the Kenya National Rugby Sevens team. Late last year the university won the overall best University in Sports in Kenya during the Kenya Universities Sports Association (KUSA) 2023, also the University’s different teams bagged a total of 30 gold medals, 13 silver medals and 19 bronze medals totaling to a total of 62 medals while participating in different tournaments in Kenya and the region.
Present at the event was Dr. Charles Karuga, Director MKU Nairobi Campus who hailed Nation Media Group for supporting the growth of young talent and stated that the occasion was Indeed a tangible and public display of Nation Media Group’s commitment to go an extra mile in impacting the surrounding community.
Also present at the event was celebrated Nation Media’s Sports journalist, Elias Makori who encouraged Students to take sport as a business, citing many sportsmen who earn a living from sports. Before the handing over ceremony, NMG and MKU representatives held discussions, which would lead to strengthening of the already existing mutually beneficial partnership between the two institutions. MKU has been running Programmes that encourage students to explore other talents as they pursue education while Nation Media Group has been supporting young talents through sport scholarships.
