Coming soon: An ultra-modern convention centre at MKU Thika
Mount Kenya University (MKU) is building an ultra –modern 2,000 eater convention centre at its main campus in Thika. With this edifice, the university plans to kill two birds with one stone. The facility will add to MKU’s revenue streams while also supporting its core mandates of teaching, research and community outreach.
Dr Evans Mwiti, Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Administration, Planning and Institutional Advancement, says this is a unique development that differentiates MKU’s offering.
He explains that while higher education institutions are slowing down on Infrastructure development, MKU is “giving priority to non-traditional projects” that add value to its offerings. The convention centre will house conference facilities with massive state-of-the-art equipment. Lately, MKU has been hosting large international research conferences.
The facility will also be used for training purposes, especially by the School of Hospitality, Travel and Tourism Management and the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, among others.
The facility will also host a media centre with a TV and radio station to support the hosting of international research conferences, seminars, meetings and conventions.
As the largest conference centre north of Nairobi, the centre will be open to the University community and other groups, such as county governments, religious institutions, schools, non-governmental organisations, private organisations and the general public.
It offers a calm and serene environment outside, yet near Nairobi City County.
