Mount Kenya University Hosts Inaugural Artificial Intelligence Strategy Development Workshop
Mount Kenya University (MKU), through its Artificial Intelligence Strategy Taskforce (MAIST), successfully held a landmark Strategy Development Workshop from July 31 to August 1, 2025, at Panorama Park Hotel in Naivasha. The two-day event marked a pivotal step in the formulation of the University’s Institutional Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy.
The workshop brought together key stakeholders from academic, research, and administrative units of the University with the goal of exploring emerging opportunities and addressing challenges associated with integrating AI across various university functions.
The meeting was graced by senior university leadership, including Prof. Peter Kirira, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Administration, Planning and Institutional Advancement (DVC APIA), and Dr. Mercyline Kamande, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Academic and Research Affairs.

Dr. Kamande emphasized that AI is no longer a distant concept—it is transforming industries, reshaping education, and redefining how we think and work. Prof. Kirira added that, “As an institution of higher learning, we must not only embrace AI but lead in its development and responsible integration within the region.”
Both DVCs reiterated the university’s unwavering commitment to the initiative, affirming that MKU is ready to support a 360-degree transformation in the implementation of AI solutions across all its operations. They noted that the development of a comprehensive AI strategy will position Mount Kenya University at the center of AI innovation in the region.
“Artificial Intelligence is not just a technological tool—it’s a catalyst for innovation in teaching, research, and administration,” Dr. John Kaman, Dean, School of Computing and Informatics, and Chair of MAIST. “As a leading institution, MKU is committed to steering its future with a well-structured and inclusive AI strategy.”
The outcomes of this workshop will form the foundation of the MKU Institutional AI Strategy, positioning the university as a forward-thinking leader in digital transformation and intelligent systems adoption in East Africa.
Mount Kenya University plans to unveil its AI Strategy later this year, aligning with global best practices and Kenya’s national digital economy blueprint.
