MKU Commissions the state-of-the art tennis court
Glam and pomp as Mount Kenya University Founder Prof. Simon Gicharu, CBS, commissions a state of the Art Tennis Court.
As a revitalized way of kicking of sporting activities and adhering to COVID – 19 containment measures as guided by the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs, the University Management has stepped up matters of sports.
This is attainable due to the support of the Founder and Vision Carrier Prof. Gicharu. On Friday, 18th February, 2022, Pro. Chancellor, Dr. Vicent Gaitho together with the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Deogratius Jaganyi commissioned the state of the art Tennis Court at Main Campus, Thika, the first of its kind in this Republic of Kenya.
Further to launching the court, Prof. Gicharu also officially launched the Wood Ball Game that is fast growing in this country with most Universities having embraced it. To bolster the sporting activities at the University; all MKU sports teams received new sports equipment’s and uniforms worth millions of shillings.
This is an effort Prof. Gicharu acknowledged is a step to ensure students are engaged fully in sporting activities. Sports is an important accompaniment in education and very vital in necessitating good performance and keeping students away from unwanted vices, such as dwelling in to drugs and substance abuse. He further congratulated the University sports teams for emerging the 2nd best overall University at the annual Kenya University Sports Association (KUSA) games that took place in December 2021.
Present at the commissioning of the Tennis Court, Wood Ball Game launch, and issuance of the equipment’s were representatives from the Division Unit of Students Welfare and Alumni Affairs, the Deputy Dean of Students Madam Purity Wairimu Thuo, University Sports Coordinator Mr. William Luta together with the Catholic Chaplain, Fr. Paul Mbugua Nganga.
Dr. Gaitho and Prof. Jaganyi, in their speeches unanimously echoed the need to emphasize the importance of sports in keeping the students busy, developing their talents as the future sports personnel’s.
