MKU joins World TB Day celebrations at Thika Town
Mount Kenya University college of Health Sciences faculty members and students led by the principal Dr. joseph Njuguna, marked world Tuberculosis (TB) Day at Thika.
The team from Mount Kenya University joined other institutions and members of public in marking the event which was themed “IT IS TIME FOR A TB FREE KENYA”
The celebrations started with a procession walk from Thika Level five (5) to Thika Stadium. Mrs. Sicily K. Kariuki, Cabinet Secretary for Health, Kenya flagged of procession. She was accompanied by Director of Medical Services Dr. Jackson Kioko, World Health Organization (WHO) Representative Dr. Richards Eggers ; Dr. Joseph Njuguna, Principal College of Health Sciences, Mount Kenya University, and members of County Executive Committee for Health.
The event was climaxed by the unveiling of The NATIONAL STRATEGIC PLAN FOR TUBERCULOSIS, LEPROSY AND LUNG HEALTH 2019-2023 which was distributed to dignitaries. Participants benefited by the free screening for TB, Diabetes, HIV ,Growth Monitoring , Body Mass Index (BMI) and other health checks
CS Sicily Kariuki, underscored the need to cascade Tuberculosis information in a language and art which could reach all the population cohorts adding that a time had come for Tuberculosis subject to be incorporated in Primary and secondary schools curricula. In her closing remarks, she declared that with all the concerted efforts, Kenya shall eliminate Tuberculosis disease by 2024 a head of the WHO target of 2030.
