MKU participated in 14th Annual Entrepreneurship Conference 2019 that was hosted by Makerere University Business School (MUBS), Uganda. The University was represented by the Vice Chairman of the University Council, Dr. Vincent Gaitho and the Deputy Director, Student Recruitment and Admissions – Diaspora, Mr. Daniel Kiriti.
The Makerere University Business School Entrepreneurship Innovation and Incubation Center (MUBS – EIIC) was launched on 13th November by the Minister of information and Innovation Uganda. The Center seeks to promote a culture of entrepreneurship among university students, innovative citizens from both urban and rural areas as well as business start-ups in Uganda. It does this through hands-on training, mentorship and coaching services.
Dr. Vincent Gaitho read the message by MKU Founder and Chairman of the Board of Directors, Prof. Simon Gicharu in which he emphasized on the need to incubate home grown solutions to the perennial problem on joblessness.
He pointed out that many Africans are dying while crossing the Mediterranean Sea in search for greener pastures and leave a lot of opportunities in Africa to be exploited by foreigners. The University donated six thousand U.S. dollars ($ 6,000) to the MUBS Entrepreneurship Innovation and Incubation Center’s (MUBS – EIIC) Unique Business Plan Competition of 2019. The competition is a call for unique business ideas for those with innovative minds across East Africa.
The launch was followed by a conference on entrepreneurship and innovation at Speke Resort Munyonyo. The participants explored the entrepreneurship ecosystem in Uganda and what needs to be done to promote innovation. Financial service providers like Stanbic, Orient Bank, DFCU Bank, and Uganda Development Bank are ready to finance innovative ideas. The participant established that the associations have a big role to play in promoting business growth.
